Soar Mill Teams Top 10 Local Experiences

The South Hams is such a haven for the young and old; couples, families and everyone who loves the great outdoors, and enjoys time spent discovering the beautiful coastline, the stunning South West coast path, our unspoilt beaches and the waterways and sea that offer the perfect times, whether, by boat, paddleboard, kayak or surf – the choices are limitless…

With so much to discover and do here in South Devon we thought that we would share some of our most favourite things. Keeping it down to the Top 10 was a challenge but one we relished!

Read on for a few ideas to make your holiday time with us, that bit more special. And, if you are looking for more, then our ‘Things to do in the South Hams guide’, is currently being updated and will be back on the web soon – with some new and exciting adventures for 2018.

1. The essence of Devon – a cream tea!

Although we do think our range of exquisite afternoon teas are probably the best in the west… we have to say that a trip to our neighbours at East Soar Farm will certainly reward the cake lovers amongst you. We highly recommend the carrot cake… just ask us for a map and off you go.

2. Learn to SUP

If you are looking for the most idyllic way to explore the beauty of the estuary or the sea, then why not take time to SUP (that’s Stand Up Paddleboarding to the uninitiated) – it is the perfect way to enjoy a water based adventure. Fun for all the family and really easy to get the hang of… we promise. Visit Salcombe Paddle Boarding to book

3. Fancy a tipple?

(Over 18’s only of course) but, if you have enjoyed tasting our very own Jen’s gin, then, you need to make a trip to Salcombe and savour the award-winning Salcombe Gin and, if you have minors then why not let them enjoy one of the local, incredibly decadent, thirst quenching cordials…

We love the dreamy Heron Valley Elderflower Fizz by local family makers, Heron Valley Drinks.

4. In need of adventure?

Then we heartily recommend a sea safari – the perfect way to admire the stunning coastline, discover hidden gems by kayak and make some magical memories. There are guided tours operating throughout the season and don’t forget to take your waterproof camera to capture the magnificent views, and maybe even take a pic of a seal or two.

5. Why not visit a lighthouse!

Those guardians of the seafarers that have graced our island for 100s of years. We have a particularly special one close by, so, get your boots on and prepare to be amazed with a walk to Start Bay, from the car park or via a circular walk to Great Mattiscombe Sand. And for all those budding ‘Attenboroughs’… make sure you’ve got your seal-spotting binoculars ready!

6. Buckets, lines and laughs a plenty for young and old…

there really is nothing more special than time spent ‘crabbing’ – peering into the depths of the water as you wait to see what lies beneath… There are plenty of great spots around; Kingsbridge pontoon and Victoria Quay are 2 of our family’s regular spots. Pick up your very own bucket and line here at reception and good luck!

7. Walkies!

Did you know we are situated on the incredibly beautiful SW Coast path; 630 miles, 230 bridges, 13 ferries, 880 gates, 436 stiles, and more than 4,000 Coast Path signs waiting… though we wouldn’t expect you to do it all in one holiday! Just, make sure you pack your best walking boots and let us make you up your very own Soar Mill Cove picnic to enjoy, as you marvel at the spectacular views, oh and there are always plenty of doggy bags for the four-legged chums too.

8. Crackin’ crab…

The Salcombe area is, rightly, celebrated for its most flavoursome crustaceans – they even have with their own festival in May – and a visit to the South Hams wouldn’t be the same without savouring this feast of the sea. With an array of eateries to choose from you could be indulging your tastebuds everywhere you go… but we may we humbly suggest that you sample our very own generously filled hand-picked crab baguette – lovingly prepared by Head Chef Ian MacDonald; a true taste of summer…

9. Go wild! Go coasteering

It is fantastic fun for all the family… have an adrenalin fuelled day with the region’s experts. Scramble over rocks, wild swim, jump from cliffs, explore sea caves and discover incredible wildlife – guaranteeing a day you’ll never forget. And if you are up for excitement and thrill-seeking then Salcombe Sea ‘n’ Shore are waiting for you to call…

10. History is, quite literally, on our doorstep

with Iron Age forts nearby and shipwrecks and smuggling tales abounding the shores… And if you are an NT lover, a trip to Overbeck’s is essential; a treasure-trove set amid an amazing Mediterranean garden, perched on probably the most spectacular headland…

Or, if you like a good story why not uncover the mystery of Greenway, Agatha Christie’s fabulous holiday home that nestles on the banks of the beautiful River Dart. It’s a fabulous family day out and, in her own words, ‘the loveliest place in the world’.

Oh, and just one more little extra… don’t forget to take the passenger ferry to East Portlemouth where you can enjoy the pristine beaches or, if you have your four legged friend in tow then hop aboard the South Sands ferry and witness the famous ‘sea tractor’ as it comes to greet you from the beautifully shallow South Sands beach

Better sign off now or the 10 will soon become 20! Happy holidays everyone.
